Syllabus
An examination of critical documentary practices in contemporary cinema and the visual arts, this course focuses primarily on non-fiction film and video, with additional considerations of photography, literature, installation, and site-specific art. Rather than offer an historical survey of documentary as such, we shall instead chart the intersections between documentary practices, broadly construed, and a number of prominent theoretical and conceptual discourses in the humanites in recent decades. Our ultimate aim is to eschew strictly taxonomical concerns in order to “think with documentary,” that is, in order to approach the field of documentary as a genuinely conceptual endeavor.

The next classes will be offered in Portuguese based on the proposed theme, exploring the documentary practices of artists and filmmakers such as Harun Farocki (with exhibition at IMS – Moreira Salles Institute), Alexander Kluge and Joaquim Pedro de Andrade.
